Visited to inquire about classes. Disappointed.
Pros:
- Coaches and trainers are qualified professionals with experience
-Reasonable pricing (maybe not, considering the student to instructor ratio)
Cons:
- The female employee at the desk had some weird cocky attitude. I understand that this is the "superstar" gym, but some people like me just don't really care about that. Just interested in training.
- If you want to train here hoping you would run into famous fighters, don't even bother.
- Instructor to student ratio is not balanced. 35~40 people to 1 Instructor is pretty bad. I visited 4 other gyms in SJ area, and they are like 30 at most.
- It might be a personal thing, but it smells like boys locker room in high school.
I'm sure the instructors are great and all, but I just wanted to leave an actual review because most the of the reviews are just praising Khabib and DC lol
Most reviews are from people outside the US and just saying they wish to be here. Well I'll be going in tomorrow to see the place for my two kids. I'll update
Update. My two kids are now attending four days per week. The coach is hard and I like that because they will learn discipline. My 5 year old looks forward for class everyday.
I am a gym owner in Washington DC. I train professional fighters and I often come to this place with my fighters to prepare for high level fights. The level of instruction is world class and if you live in San Jose you need to take full advantage of the opportunity to train with team that has accomplished so much in the martial arts world! Respect! 🙏🙏
The facility here is amazing. The trainers are very knowledgeable and are welcoming to new students, as I was brand new here today. I had a great session and will definitely come back.
Everyone here is SO nice! We've visited twice now - first time was just so my partner could see where some of their favorite fighters trained, the second time as part of our gym road trip tour - and both times we were greeted by awesome people at the front desk and each time we were able to meet one of our favorite fighters (with the help of said awesome people). I love how it really feels like they are still about their community.
We did try sending an email before asking about class opportunities with no reply - maybe email is just not their thing?
I stopped in @ AKA. Pretty stoked they offer a Day Pass. I took a kickboxing class, it was a lot of fun! I was impressed with Coach Isaiah. He seems like a natural born instructor. The gym is Chill, I wanted to stay longer. The facility itself is Huge. Probably one of the coolest gyms I've been to. Can't wait to go back!
My 7 yr old has been taking MMA classes here for the last 2 months. He loves it! Coach Wayne is tough but good. The facility is more rundown especially during Covid but the staff is friendly. Most importantly my son is having fun, getting a good workout, learning real fighting techniques and also being disciplined. Pricing is also competitive which is a plus!
I read good things online so I was pretty excited to give this place a try. I only went to a single Muay Thai trial class but I won't be going back...
The instructor to student ratio is totally off. There was only a single instructor for a class of at least 50 people. During the whole 1 hour class, I didn't interact with the instructor a single time. I'm not even sure what he was doing the whole time. His explanations were poor and didn't incorporate any feedback based on how the class was doing. I actually didn't learn anything. Maybe the instructor was new to teaching but he just seemed arrogant and gave off an impression that he was too good for us and couldn't be bothered to teach.
On top of it all, the lady at the front desk put on a friendly façade but was actually kind of rude.
My daughter is 4 and loves it here, the coach is amazing with kids. She is always excited to go back. She gets a great work out, and is always learning new things . Friendly staff and cool AKA gear.
Update: If you are lucky to be able to train at AKA dont miss out. We moved out of town and no gym compares to the quality of training you get at AKA. The staff is amazing, they truly make you feel like family, the gym is cleaned daily. They really go above and beyond to make your entire family feel welcomed. It broke our hearts to leave AKA. And now after having our daughter train at other gyms we realize the magnitude of how great AKA really is. Dont waste your time at other gyms. Our daughter loved seeing many of the fighters she saw on TV there at AKA , it was a constant reminder that hard work pays off. The prices are good due to the quality of training and the amount time you spend training.
